Our Story

We Just Wanted Our Kid
to Practice Piano

Child's hands on piano keys

It started with a simple problem. Our daughter wanted to learn piano, and we got her a MIDI keyboard — one of those compact USB controllers that are perfect for small hands and small apartments. The plan was simple: plug it into the computer and let her play.

Except there was nothing to plug it into.

Every option we found was either a full-blown DAW that required a music production degree to set up, a subscription service that wanted $10/month for what should be a basic utility, or a janky web app that hadn't been updated since 2015 and didn't actually work with MIDI.

All we wanted was something dead simple: plug in the keyboard, open a website, hear piano sounds. That's it. No accounts, no downloads, no credit cards. Just a kid, a keyboard, and music.

"Why doesn't this exist? It's 2026. Browsers can do MIDI. Someone should just... make this."

So we did.

FreeMidiKeyboard.com is the tool we wished existed. It uses the Web MIDI API built into modern browsers to connect directly to any USB MIDI controller. The sound engine runs entirely in your browser — no server, no latency, no data leaving your computer. It auto-detects your keyboard the moment you plug it in, supports velocity sensitivity so you can play soft and loud, and even handles the sustain pedal.

We even added a sustain pedal polarity flip because — as we learned the hard way — some pedals send their signal backwards, and our kid kept wondering why the piano sounded "sticky." Now you can fix that with one toggle.

It's free. It will always be free. No ads, no tracking, no upsells. We built it for our family, and now it's for yours too.
